When last I wrote on the subject, it looked promising. It got better. I had a face-to-face interview with the PM for the prime that went smoothly. He had wanted another technical person to participate, but he got tied up in actual work and was not able to be present or dial in. The plan was for the tech to call me later to chat. I headed out to deposit checks, and then started toward home. My phone rings.

They didn't wait for the second tech interview; they decided that they wanted me if I'd have the job. I needed to execute a bunch of paperwork, so the question was when I could get in to the office to do so. Conveniently, I was in that neck of the woods, so I turned around and showed right up.

I'm slated to start Monday.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, I got a phone call from a recruiter. She asked if I'd like to make a career change. I explained that I had just accepted and offer, but asked what I would be missing out on. She says Sybase. She says "in DC". I noted that my new job is Sybase, at the Navy Yard. She gasps. I say MSC. She gasps again. She was trying to recruit me for the job I have accepted. Hilarity ensued. We laughed a bunch. It would appear that my (rather rusty) Sybase skills are something of a novelty these days. Whatever. It got me a job that I am looking forward to.

The same thing happened to me: the day after I accepted my current position, I got a call from a different recruiter trying to pitch me the same job.

Congrats on the new job!

Well, I claim Sybase expertise and a security clearance, so that makes me look like a fit. Further, the job I am about to take up is the same job (modulo 9 years of evolution) that I was laid off from 9 years ago. Since my earlier departure was driven by external events not related to the performance of my job, there was no black mark on my record that would preclude my return. In fact, one of the people I worked with is still there; another just left a week and a half ago, and the government lead moved to Commerce in March (or so).

This must be the job you were at when I stayed with you before Jae's wedding; I remember heading to DC from the army base one morning (and being highly amused when one young soldier addressed me as "sir" when I asked for directions to the underground stop).

It's still on the market. If we sell it, we look for something smaller that is suitably placed. We are not irrevocably committed to selling.

Congratulations! That is great news. I'm very glad this makes the move a choice, instead of a necessity.

Now, if I could just get healthy enough to start my job. My "sprained ankle" is actually a broken heel bone. Add on a blood clot in my calf, and I may not get to start until after the 4th. And I'm not driving myself for probably 3 months.
