The weekend redux
Jul. 8th, 2007 11:33 amI decided to make a day trip down to Assessments in Black Diamond. For those following along on a map, that's nine-plus hours of driving. I left home at 0415.
The whole point of this exercise was to see
isenglass get recognized for her glass work with elevation to the Order of the Laurel. That's one of the big SCA cookies. Woot!
She was placed on vigil in the morning and elevated in the afternoon. The vigil site was glorious. The event site has a wooded garden area that provided a place for the candidate to receive visitors as well as room for hospitality (read: "food") and schmoozing. The sitting area was given privacy by simple distance instead of requiring a tent or the like. The schmoozing area was also very attractive simply by being in low ground under trees -- very good given the weather.
It was interesting to be able to go to an event and not have a whole lot tying me down all day (such as, for example, minding the store). It's nice to be able to do that now and then.
amykb did the scroll. It was magnificent, and I was privileged to apply the counter-signature on behalf of Triton (having been one before) that certified that the name and arms depicted were as registered. Not that I had any doubt of that, mind you, but the previous time I examined a scroll with an eye to doing that, I found things that needed fixed before it could be so signed.
The drive home was a bit brutal, being mostly after my bedtime, but I made it without misadventure. I gassed up in Harrisonburg, and was delighted to see the car claiming to be getting over 60 mpg while cruising at 61 mph or so. It didn't drop below 60 for the first 75 miles or so, and still reads 58 or so.
The event site was out in the hills in Bedford County, VA. Wonderful scenery.
