I tried something different last night. It didn't come out quite the way I wanted, but I think it's still not bad.

8 cups sugar
5 cups water

bring to boil

add 2 cups vinegar (white in this case)

bring back to boil or so and simmer 20 minutes

add 2 pounds strawberrys hulled and cut in half

bring back to boil for about 5 minutes

cover and let cool.

I left the strawberries in the syrup.

This was inspired by the "strawberry water" I've run into at a couple of events in the East. At Coronation just past, I noted that the ingredients list looked just like secanjabin made with strawberries instead of mint.

This is my first pass at the idea...

I suspect this would also do well with raspberries, for which I have a distinct preference over strawberries.
