We made our annual trip to Maine to visit with my brother-in-law near his birthday, and, since it's in the next town over, do Great Northeastern War.

The trip up included an overnight stop in western Massachussets to visit the Bodines. Bob is recovering from cancer surgery; the doctor doesn't think he needs the prophylactic chemo or radiation therapy that is not uncommon. That's wonderful news.

I'd noted the retail establishments that New Hampshire conveniently places on the interstate with their own exits, and decided to stop there this time. I left with two bottles of scotch -- Caol Ila (18) and Bowmore (17). Decent prices on each.

We got to the campground about three in the afternoon. Prime "set up the tent" time of the day. Right. Bloody hot! (and that's by Washington, DC, standards, let alone Maine). Got the tent up and stuff mostly unloaded into it then off to visit b-i-l (Bill, even).

Again, a suitably boring but nice visit and dinner...back to camp to get the bed set up so we could sleep, being rather beat. Next morning saw shop setup and a decent day's business along with some wonderful visiting and conversations.

...then it got interesting.

My nose decided to bleed. That's annoying, but something I've dealt with for 40 years.

Then it decided to cut loose a couple hours later.

Then it cut loose at one am and wouldn't stop. Megan got a chirurgeon who tried the standard first aid, but it wouldn't quite stay stopped. Someone called 911, and I got to experience the emergency health care system in and around Auburn, Maine, from the inside. Conversation with the EMT was interesting. They were not ignorant of the SCA, seeing as how one of the co-workers was at the event.

By the time I got to the ER, the bleeding had (for the moment) stopped, but the doctor was not happy with the appearance of the inside of my nose, so it was time for a packing. They stuffed a "nasal tampon" up my nose, which was not nearly as nasty as that might sound.

Now that the ER was done with their part, it was time to get a ride back to camp. The chirurgeon had given Megan her cell phone number so we could call her. Somehow, that number was not in Megan's cell phone when she went to call it. Fortunately, I had [livejournal.com profile] kyleri's number and rousted her at 0300 or so. Eventually, our ride showed up, and it turned out to be the Van the Size of France! Most folks had stripped seats out of cars to bring their stuff to the event, and it was a bit more work than one might have thought to find a vehicle with enough seating. I was grateful for a bench I could just lay down in.

Suffice it to say, sleep was not something either of us were up to speed on...

Packing out was complicated by the fact that I needed to take it easy. No heavy lifting for certain. Fortunately, Mr. Green Mountain Leather helped with a couple heavy things early in the load, and a Brute Squad arrived later just when we were ready for many hands. If my memory has not failed me, they said that they were "Clan MacFarlane". In any case, they were of inestimable assitance, for which we remain thankful (and made sure to proffer to them a concrete expression of that -- "loot").

The drive home included stops for pharmaceuticals, ice, and fuel (given that petrol prices in Maine were attractive) before we hit I-95, another stop in New Hampshire for more scotch, and a number of slugs of ugly traffic. One more stop for gas along the NJ TP and we finally made it home at one AM.

Monday was not the most productive day I've had at work, but I made it in. I don't remember hearing my alarm go off. Even if I hit the "off" instead of the "snooze" button, I usually am able to recall that I did push the wrong button when I wake up later than I meant. Not Monday...

Wheeee....

Yow!!! I used to have chronic nosebleeds but I *never* had anything like that!

Want to check with you and Megan tomorrow about whether my presence would be beneficial for setting up the tent this weekend at SRWC.

It was 3:40. I remember that vividly.

...as I recall, I was attempting to answer the phone with 'birth or death', on the theory that if it ain't one of the two it's gonna be the latter, but I apparently managed to say 'nnmghf' or some such.

Fortunately that was enough to let Herveus know that something had answered the phone and was likely human or potentially so, and he talked to me long enough that eventually I could make actual words.

Good to know you guys got home safe.

Glad to hear you're ok. Is that Bob Bodine, aka Boden, you're talking about? I haven't seen him in forever. Hope things work out for him.

[This is Erich, by the way]

Well, it was not dry and nasty; it was nicely lubricated... :)

Slid right in all the way.

I'm sure you've heard already, but Bob died a week ago. He will be greatly missed.

Just thought I'd drop a line about Bob Bodine. I haven't spoken or heard from Bob in about 20 years. Bob was a neighbor of mine growing up in King of Prussia, back when he worked with Strategy and Fantasy World. He was a great guy and a wonderful friend. My wife (back then my girlfriend) made several of his Markland outfits. Later, after we first married, we lived in the same apartment complex as Bob. When I heard he passed away I was so sad that we had lost touch. But my memories of Boden! are everlasting. From his D&D campaign (Darkbeer - how appropriate!), to Markland, to his Honda Goldwing and 320Z, and his never clean apartment. God we'll miss you Bob.
