In today's mail I found five envelopes, identical save for the addressee.

They each contained a sheet of light blue paper and a light blue envelope.

Yes. The Storvik baronial polling arrived on our street today (and I discerned that they had arrived down the street as well). Yahoo!

Baronial polling? What's that? (I always love finding out how other kingdoms do things)

Atlantian Law, and the Kingdom Seneschal's Policy describe in somewhat excruciating detail how the baronial selection process is to go.

The B&B of Storvik are stepping down. The Crown gets to pick new baronage. The requisite three candidates were proffered to the crown. They approved, and now a formal, written polling has been mailed out to the SCA members living in the ZIP codes that comprise the barony. We mail them back to the Crown and await their decision.

The crown specified that the Storvik polling use blue paper and envelopes. That way, they can sort the mail by color, to keep the responses to the four or five pollings apart easily. Each barony was assigned a color.

Kingdom law defines the landed baronage as "officers" subject to the standard term limits. Two years with two option years for a maximum of four years.

http://law.atlantia.sca.org has all the gory details...

Oh interesting.

Here in Calontir, we have interested couples volunteer themselves to the crown. The crown does interviews with each couple, and requests the input from the rest of the group. Then then make their decision. The chosen couple reigns for a period of traditionally around 2 years, but they decide when they want to step down. No specified term limits.
