herveusI spent the evening in the BSR news room. That gave me a chance to eat dinner at Anita's that I don't often arrange. It also allowed me to take away a pint each of fresh salsa ("hot sauce") and green chile sauce. Yum. It was nice to just hang out without the computer to hand. CNN showed the least restraint, waiting a whole 18 seconds after the polls in California closed to project Obama the winner. Oh, the astonishment.
On the up side, John McCain showed a bucket-load of class in his concession speech and in his response to the supporters who started groaning and near-booing when he started mentioning Obama's name. He could have let them carry on, but instead, he gave clear disapproval of their actions. His concession speech was unequivocal, gracious, and just plain classy. One can wonder who put that John McCain under a bushel basket during much of the campaign, but that's mostly spilled milk now. Again, in the end, he was a class act. He was clear that the fight was over, and that his supporters should support Obama now. Well, I suppose he meant as the loyal opposition, but he didn't come right out and say that. That's fine by me. His concession did not appear to contain caveats in any way.
I caught Obama's victory speech while driving home (way too late and way past my bedtime for the second night in a row :P). It was nice. Very nice. Gracious to his opponent. No veiled digs. Positive without being giddy.
I'm glad to see that Senator Dole will have an opportunity to return to Kansas. That campaign had some particularly vile moments. What was Dole thinking? Or was it someone else who needs an extended session behind the woodshed? Whichever...
It looks like Prop 8 will be defeated, but it appears to be not yet a done thing. I'm hopeful.
All in all, I don't have substantial heartburn with the various results. Not everything went the way I wanted it to, but the big items look to have done so. Let's see if I can get through the day without an unscheduled nap... :)
