A friend is staying with us a few days so he can take in the inauguration more directly. I persuaded him to *not* try to drive to the Metro but rather to accept a ride from me on my way to work and a pick-up later. Good move. Coming in US 50 toward the New Carrollton station, the traffic was backed up along the right side all the way back to the exit for 704. It was all backed up on the long ramp across the beltway to get to the station. For the rest of the highway, there were about *2* cars. I went down to the *other* exit for station, executed a quick U-turn, and dropped Dave off a bit farther out than the Kiss&Ride (for which I would have faced about a dozen cars lined up in that direction. I popped back on to 50 thence the inner loop bound for the Wilson Bridge. Traffic was lighter than normal, even though I was an hour later than normal.

WTOP was reporting waits of an hour or more just to get in to some Metro stations, and by 7:15, the lots were officially "full" at most of the end-of-line stations and others, but some still had plenty of spaces and no waits to get it. Go figure.

Now, I-95 coming up to the beltway in Springfield sucked major rocks. Lots of tour buses in that jam.

I wonder how the Wilson bridge will be heading home this afternoon. I fully expect to experience something novel. Delays. The thing that Has Not Happened since they opened up the express lanes on the bridge. Yes, Virginia, the normal expectation for the Wilson bridge during rush hour is "moving at speed; no delays". I guess we really did get something for that $700M. :)

There have been some travel warnings all the way down here in NC for I-85 and I-95, and that was before the snow.
