I made bi bim bap for dinner. It was a successful experiment. Even the dog liked it.

What I did:

3 cups of rice in the rice cooker

two small zucchinis near julienned, salted, and sauteed

two carrots julienned and sauteed

three large mushrooms sliced, sauteed, with a bit of sugar and soy sauce added

two green onions sliced up

some purple cabbage sauteed and slightly sugared

a slab of cow sliced up thin, marinated a bit in some garlic, sesame oil, sugar, and soy sauce, then sauteed

fried or scrambled egg to top the mess

You put a pile of rice in the bowl, then add vegetables and meat, top with egg if desired, and stir it up. If I had some kochujang (red pepper paste), I would have added a blob of that for extra spice. Next time...

The dog liked the zucchini and the cabbage. Not so much the carrots. In fact, the dog got the remaining bits of cabbage, zucchini, and a bit of meat with some rice. He slurped it up.

I keep thinking I'll make this one day, and never get to it. And I've got some tried-and-true recipes for it, even...

Yeah, it absolutely needs the rooster sauce.

I made mahndoo gui, gochu pajun, and bulgoki for dinner a couple of months back. Fairly good, but not as good as our favorite restaurant in Glen Burnie (Goong Jeon) makes.

Okay, I think you and Timothy are channelling each other today. I mentioned you made Be bim bap for dinner and he starts laughing. Turns out he had Be bim bap today for lunch!

And he didn't bring me any leftovers!!!

Can you recommend a place to get kochujang in this broad neck of the woods?

You must be lucky because every time we mixed my parents dog with cabbage the dog needed banishing for a good few hours on health and safety grounds.

Sounds like a good recipe though.

If you want the pepper paste we have a really, really fabulous international market here in Pasadena. It's called Simple Green and is at the intersection of Rt. 100 and Rt. 2, across the street from Marley Station Mall. I know for a fact they carry it, in several different varieties and sizes. Along with lots of fresh, homemade kimchi's.

I'm not familiar with any places down in Bowie, unfortunately.
