So last night, my son reports that a raccoon brazenly walked past our front porch ignoring the people standing there. After tangling with a cat, it was out in the street, where it managed to get slightly run over by a car.

As best as I can tell, it ended up with a broken hind leg. My son reported that it screamed real loud.

It dragged itself out of the road and took refuge under a parked car. We called Animal Control, and they said they'd send someone out right away. In the next 30+ minutes, the raccoon dragged itself about, occasionally chittering and moaning. I could see that it was a juvenile. It would limp ten feet and rest. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Eventually, I was able to get it to walk into a cardboard box. It would rest for a few minutes and then try to find a way out of the box. I think it was trying to put weight on the hurt leg, judging from the noise it was making. Animal Control did eventually show up and took the poor fellow off. I hope they were either able to treat the injury or put it out of its misery. My conscience is clear.

Way back when I was going to the University of Delaware, I got heavily involved with the PLATO system. PLATO was a major time sink as well as a source of employment there. PLATO sort of faded away as Control Data Corporation faded away, but it's legacy lives on in many ways.

cyber1 popped up on my radar recently. I got an account on the PLATO system they are running, and it's got great potential still as a time sink. I've discovered that my fingers remember what to do in empire, twenty years after the fact. It's worrisome... :)

Oh, and that's empire, the Star Trek inspired multiplayer space combat/conquest game with four sides and up to 30 players. nettrek is (despite claims to the contrary) a clear clone of that game, at least from the game mechanics point of view.
