Voting...the saga and the amusement
Nov. 8th, 2006 08:26 amMy precinct was busy all day. I heard a report of a 1.5 hour wait at the beginning of the day, and a 2.25 hour wait at lunch time. I waited 3 hours in line, and folks arriving near the closing time of 8 p.m. had closer to a 4 hour wait.
At least the poll workers tried to help maintain a good humor, and I didn't perceive grumbling. The biggest slowdown appears to have been the ten page ballot. There were lots of things to look over and consider. They seemed to have an appropriate number of machines.
I saw one of those flyers the Ehrlich and Steele campaigns were distributing that was disturbingly slimy. The front page (glossy and slick) has photos of Jack Johnson, Wayne Curry, and Kweisi Mfume and the words "These are OUR Choices". Inside, labeled "Democratic Sample Ballot", it listed Democratic candidates (mostly) as the preferred choices, save Ehrlich for governor and Steele for senator. Ehrlich and Steele were *not* identified as Republicans in the "guide".
Johnson is the current county executive, running unopposed. Mfume lost in the primary to Ben Cardin. Curry is a former county executive.
Curry is the only one of the three who actually endorsed Steele.
All three are black and Democrats.
The folks distributing the flyers were said to have been recruited at homeless shelters in Philadelphia, paid $100 and two meals, and bused in. Ehrlich is said to have claimed "it's legal" (now true), and "it's what the Democrats have done forever". Ehrlich is a shameless git.
I'm glad he gets to find new employment.
edit: I forgot the "amusement" part. I was making good use of my iPod while I was waiting. As I'm leaving the polling room, the song that came up was "Thank You" by Dido.
goddessgoddess uses that as her exit music. I was amused.
