...was to repent of his sins. He used to preach the gospel to enlighten and uplift people and preached against trying to effect explicit social change. Of course, the cynic might note also that this may have been a direct attempt to tell Dr. King to Shut Up, but there it was. Later, he decided that maybe social change was a good thing to preach for. Too bad he didn't understand the part about tolerance and charity. I guess they didn't pay as well.
I don't quite revel in his passing, as it does not do anything to undo the harm he and his ilk have wrought upon Christianity and upon this nation. I've long been more than merely annoyed at his attempts to redefine Christianity so narrowly. One can uncharitably hope that he is now reaping the rewards of the afterlife that he has earned. Unfortunately, demagogues of his nature seem to refresh themselves as the hydra, and he wasn't the foulest of the lot, even as he aimed pretty low.
It is entertaining in a morbid way to note the reports that Fred Phelps plans to attend the funeral. I wonder if he is bringing his usual bucket of idiocy to blame Falwell's demise on homosexuals, or if he is actually coming to show his respect.
On the up side, I put a brisket of corned beef in the crock pot before I headed off to work this morning. When I get home, I take the spare ribs that have been pondering the dry rub I put on them last night into the oven for some quality time with a slow oven. If I'm really motivated when I get home, I'll make up another batch of chopped liver as well.

Date: 2007-05-16 03:46 pm (UTC)As much as I love both corned beef and ribs, I think I'm going to have to miss tonight because I have to clean my house before my houseguest arrives on Friday and tomorrow is a rehearsal night.

Date: 2007-05-16 02:44 pm (UTC)My crockpot is currently nursing a large heap of boneless country-style ribs. Browned 'em last night on the grill, and then tossed back in the Italian dressing to soak overnight. Crockpotted them this AM with an onion and 1.5 bottles of bbbq sauce.

Date: 2007-05-16 06:42 pm (UTC)Unfortunately, I will be comatose this evening. It's heading toward migraine territory, so sleep is recommended. Sigh. Have fun!
