It reminds me of a storied tale back when 14.4's ruled the 'net.
A friend of my acquaintance had his 9600 Sportster struck down by Thor and, in the market for a new modem, purchased a Supra internal 14.4 for half the price of a comparable Sportster (Lets not talk about how much my Courier of the same vintage cost, yes? Good!). He followed the instructions carefully, installing with all due reverence, until it came to the matter of drivers. For reasons inexplicable, the disk did not read correctly and thus the drivers would not load. When he contacted Supra to request a new disk, he was informed that that was unnecessary, as he could download the new drivers directly from the BBS. After _10 minutes_ of explaining to the lady why this was impossible and her summarily rebuking his arguments out of hand, he hung up, returned the modem and got another USR, which worked like a charm.
