Report from Daegu
Oct. 27th, 2007 05:18 pmI've got the weekend to do stuff other than work. Today, several of us got together after noon and went up Apsan Mountain. It's a big park with gobs of trails and Bhuddist temples. We took the cable car to the top where we spent time in the restaurant.
I drank a moderate amount of dongdong ju, a rice beer that is sort of like homemade hard cider. It was yeasty, milky, and had chunks of rice floating in it. The smell was a bit off-putting, but it was worth getting past that. We also drank a fair amount of a local beer that was surprisingly yummy. It was a light American style lager, but sweet. The four of us killed five half-liter bottles of that plus a large flask of dongdong ju. There were several small children who took me for Santa Claus. I also got the ZZ Top bit from someone.
The actual work (yeah, what they are paying me to do here!) has been interesting and productive, if a bit chaotic as well. I'm also getting in a fair amount of walking in the course of a day, getting from my hotel (on base) to the work place.

Date: 2007-10-28 10:31 am (UTC)It was cloudy and fizzy the way freshly hardened cider gets. It had bits of rice floating in it. It smelled yeasty, and almost nasty, but it was quite sweet to the taste. It's probably popular as a home-brew -- it seems like it should be easy to produce and fast.
