duchesspadr's questions
Jun. 16th, 2008 01:57 pm1. You travel to a bunch of kingdoms. What's your favorite oddity of inter-kingdom anthropology?
We mostly hit the East and AEthelmearc, with the Midrealm and Drachenwald coming farther back. Atenveldt we hit once a year (Estrella), and I've been to heraldic annual conventions in Northshield, Trimaris, Meridies, Calontir, Ealdormere and Outlands to round out the list.
It's hard to pick out a "favorite oddity". I guess I'd note the varied ways of giving acclaim in court. I've come up in the "vivat three times" crowd. "hoobah" strikes me as rather odd, and "huzzah" is just a different way.
2. What's your favorite non-SCA artistic activity?
Singing Sacred Harp music - shaped note music. It's a style that developed in the hills that made it feasible for people who couldn't read music to sight-sing music. It is four part harmony with the melody usually in the tenor line, sung with gusto, and frequently with fuguing in the chorus.
3. Where did you star playing in the SCA, and where?
In Storvik around 1990. We started in Markland back in the mid-to-late 1970s. Markland became rather hostile to families with small children. At the same time, we started looking at the SCA and found a welcoming enviroment for children. We started playing SCA pretty much exclusively in late 1989.
4. What is the single most significant change you have seen in the SCA since you've been doing it?
It appears to me that the level of bureaucratic process and paperwork has tended to increase unpleasantly. I've internalized this to the point that I have zero interest in just about any SCA office.
5. What's your morning beverage of choice, and how do you take it?
Coffee, usually black. Sometimes with cream. If I add sugar, it's a sign of bletcherous coffee.
