It's the day midway between my birthday and [livejournal.com profile] baron_rorik's. That means that it's the night for sushi and good beer. We first did this in 1992 (see also "total lunar eclipses on December 9").

This year, we went to Annapolis, it having been a few years.

We first went to Joss sushi bar, making note of Nomo as we passed. We ordered a fair selection but were a bit disappointed by several of the offerings. It wasn't so bad as to warrant complaint, but it was merely "OK". Normally, we'd order sushi, then order more sushi. We asked for the check after the first round.

We moseyed up to Ramshead and had a Doppelbock each (getting in at the Happy Hour rates!) while the sushi settled, and then returned to examine Nomo.

Nomo's exterior signage claimed (variously) "Sushi and Thai" and "Sushi and Asian" or something like that. The menu posted outside did show some useful differences with Joss, in particular, "fatty salmon" and "fatty yellowtail". Woot!

We were able to sit at the bar (unlike Joss, where the bar was full). I asked the chef what was good. He reached for the slab-o-fatty-tuna. We ordered fatty tuna, fatty salmon, and fatty yellowtail, plus eel and scallop, plus a salmon skin roll. The spicy sauce on the scallop was not the best choice for us, but it was still recognizably good. The fatty tuna was Really Good. The best Toro I can recall having, being the only instance that was at all buttery in the mouth. Nom Nom Nom! Organism noises that the staff noticed. You get the picture.

Oh, and the house sake at Nomo actually had some flavor besides alcohol, unlike the offering at Joss. I ordered a second flask before we had quite killed off the first.

For "dessert", we had more fatty salmon and fatty tuna, and, on the advice of one of the staff, the "Super White Tuna". Good call... That tuna was really nummy. Not quite as good as the fatty tuna, but that's not meant as faint praise.

For dessert, we had Green Tea Mochi. I've never had mochi before, although I've seen it being prepared (in Korea). Nummy!

We ate at Nomo until we could eat No Mo. :)

We decided not to go to Heroes and drink more beer, as beer doesn't agree with Rorik like it used to. I was fine with that. We went in search of some Coffee With Character. Unfortunately, our first attempt at Riordans foundered on the fact that they appear to be in the midst of significant renovations. Fortunately, the bar catty-corner (McGarveys) did also offer Coffee With Character. It was fine. While there, I noticed a sign behind the bar. It read "FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE AN ATM IS LOCATED BY THE RESTROOM". For some reason, the phrase "Larry Craig Memorial ATM" came to mind.

After that, a bit of walking around to clear the head was followed by an uneventful trip home. All in all, a fine evening, keeping my up past my bedtime. G'nite, y'all.

I can forsee an expedition to Nomo in the not too distant future with reinforcements. They did say that they have a back room that holds an undetermined number of people.

Woot!

Sounds like a very happy ending. I'll definitely have to check NOMO out!

Okay, I'm not much of a sushi person, but I've been wanting to check out Ramshead for years.

Ooo, good sushi. Very nice.

If I may suggest for another time, the Edo sushi house up in the Harborplace buildings in Balmer is excellent. Great view to.

FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE AN ATM IS LOCATED BY THE RESTROOM

Okay is it convenient because you need to pay for the loo or is it just so you can get money on the way back for the next round having recycled the previous round....

Shakes head with wonder as to why the location is convenient.

Glad you had a good time. I love Sushi too!

...or because you might need folding money *in* the restroom for some other purpose (see also the Larry Craig crack).

Happy Birthday! I used to weird out my students by telling them my favorite kinds of sushi were negitoro (minced tuna with onions) and Otoro (really expensive fatty tuna). The first was usually 2 pieces for a dollar, the second was about $7 per piece. Seriously though, ask if they have negi toro, it's one of our favorites - and really cheap.

As for the Mochi - next time there's a full moon... look to see if you can find a bunny pounding rice into mochi. That's what the Japanese see. No man in the moon there.
