So we order another batch of sales slips. We provide camera ready copy (complete with crop marks plainly identifying it as 8.5 x 5.5). Staples calls to say they are in (this being Monday).

Right. They printed them up on 8.5 x 7. WTF? Far worse, the smaller text was unreadable. Pixelated. As if they reduced the resolution to 36 dpi grey scale.

I take them back. They say 5-7 days. I say we must have them by Friday. They say "we'll try". I say "not good enough". They say "we'll have them". They lied. They shipped from the printer today. They won't have them until Saturday or Monday. They have agreed to ship them to us at Pennsic and are supposed to call me when they do so. We'll see.

Suffice it to say that we won't be doing more of this sort of business through Staples.

Fortunately, we have enough slips to get us well into the war (absent a major reverse mugging early).

This sort of thing is why I opt to do all of the printing and burning of anything associated with my CDs myself.

It takes more time and is much more labor intensive, but everytime I've tried to outsource as places that I can actually afford, the end game resembles a story like yours, where the only way I prevail is thru drama and brute force.

My heart goes out to you. (He said, up to his elbows in the final printing and burning of stock for Pennsic)

Glad to know that you're not entirely caught with downed trow.

That said...a reverse mugging? Some guy walks up, puts a domino mask on you and repeatedly slams his face into your hand until you take his money? My, but you have strange folk out that way.

I've used my local Staples for binding jobs (personal stuff-Edwardian & Victorian astronomy books scanned onto Google books or the Internet Archive) for a while now, & Devora's been buying heavily from them for her classes. Aside from a few times when they didn't have a thicker-than-usual ring spine in stock, & it took a couple of weeks for their central warehouse to finally ship the ring spine, I haven't had any real complaints with their work.
