Yesterday, Heather and MJ made a road trip to Wytheville, VA. That's most of the way down I-81. They returned with a dog. He is named Chocolate. He's (mostly) black lab.

He's also rather underweight and has a few other health issues. He's been home less than 24 hours as of this point. He also Smells Like Dog big time. There's a skin condition involved that should be amenable to some special shampoo.

Chocolate appears to be somewhere around 4 or 5 years old. This is going to be an interesting ride.

Labs do tend to Smell Like Dog. It's just the way they are. Enjoy him.

It's possible that he has Demodectic mange, which is a non-contagious form of mange that's primarily caused by malnutrition, severe stress or a comprimised auto-immune system.

Seeing as you've not really talked about anything other than the odour (which can be a bit strong), baths with a non-irritating shampoo and fattening the old boy up seems like reasonable and inexpensive first steps.

That may in fact be the case. The vet said that there was some medical condition, but I did not get the proper name.

Devora's family bought a part black lab, part shepard dog at about the same time that she & I began dating. They named him Einstein. Let's hope that Chocolate is smarter than E., on the ground that E. once attacked a tent, & lost. That being said, he was in other ways a good dog, except that he really didn't get the fetching game.
