Found on the online help page from Verizon under the symptom "cannot connect to the Internet":

If you still can't connect to the Internet, visit Verizon Repair.

...and, heard on the phone while holding for "help" with this problem:

"You can do all this online."

Right.

Verizon is creating significant annoyance. Three times in the last ten days, we've had the internet go out. Rebooting the router seems to have been the fix, but it's disappointing, to say the least.

I'm not astonished that the "piece of crap" consumer grade router that I had with the DSL connection (and bought by me in my ignorance) needed periodic reboots, but I expect better out of the gear provided by Verizon. Maybe I'm a foolish optimist.

This grumble brought to you by the "and who peed in your Wheaties today?" group.

I'm sure there's a logic to having a "cannot connect to the internet" help page online.

It's up there with leaving a voicemail message with your voicemail password.

It reminds me of a storied tale back when 14.4's ruled the 'net.

A friend of my acquaintance had his 9600 Sportster struck down by Thor and, in the market for a new modem, purchased a Supra internal 14.4 for half the price of a comparable Sportster (Lets not talk about how much my Courier of the same vintage cost, yes? Good!). He followed the instructions carefully, installing with all due reverence, until it came to the matter of drivers. For reasons inexplicable, the disk did not read correctly and thus the drivers would not load. When he contacted Supra to request a new disk, he was informed that that was unnecessary, as he could download the new drivers directly from the BBS. After _10 minutes_ of explaining to the lady why this was impossible and her summarily rebuking his arguments out of hand, he hung up, returned the modem and got another USR, which worked like a charm.

Err... I'll note for the record that the router provided by Verizon is a consumer grade piece of crap. They're not likely to just hand out equipment that's actually *gasp* high grade.

It's certainly a huge amount of luck that's contributed to our router not blowing out on us yet. I've only had to reset it once in the last 15 months... but I keep dreading the day it burns out.

I got exactly the same advice from Comcast....'we have a troubleshooting site online'. Now, ain't that helpful. You can drive into the library, print it off and drive home rather than wait to talk to them. The sad thing, is that that might actually be faster and simpler. I feel your pain.

We have Verizon Online. For the past few years, we have had one outage, lasting about a day.

I guess it depends on where you are.
